#cleanbrakpan ushers in New Year by tackling Brenthurst

The group hopes to, with the help of local businesses, keep Brakpan clean and neat.

With four projects in 10 days, the Clean Brakpan project started the year with a bang in Brenthurst.

Headed by Brakpan CPF, volunteers started their first project on December 29, cleaning the park between Lester and Trollip streets in Brenthurst.

The second park to be cleaned was Kobus Nel Park on Joubert and Thomas streets.

They cleaned the park on December 30, where Riaan Marais loaned the volunteers his ride-on mower and Frekies Pet Shop donated 30l petrol.

“It’s amazing how the kids come out to play when the parks are clean. We, the people, get the job done. No more waiting on the council,” reads the Facebook post about the second park.

The Time 2 Rise SA movement joined the third cleanup on January 4 for a prayer circle, and the fourth happened on January 6.

Lisa Jordaan, the secretary of the Brakpan CPF, said: “We have been very busy with cleaning Brakpan, did four projects in 10 days; so we are tired but feeling so positive. It is time to make Brakpan clean again and take pride in our town.”

Tinus Jordaan, the chairperson of CPF, said that he and Kim van Zyl started the Clean Brakpan project.

“We saw the need to clean our town; to put a stop to the slow decay of our once beautiful town, as the council is not doing anything.

“We have partnered with the CPF, SAPS, VF+, and other groups like the Safe Cities Forum and Time 2 Rise SA. It is not our mess, but it is our town,” he said.

The next project will be the road on Boyd and Van der Merwe streets in Brenthurst. A local business will sponsor it.

“We need the community and businesses to help sponsor and ‘adopt’ neglected areas for the cost of fuel, labour costs, machinery and tools,” Tinus concluded.

Donations or contributions can be arranged by contacting Clean Brakpan at cleanbrakpan@gmail.com or 068 881 9839.

The group plans to continue working on the project and follow their progress on the Clean Brakpan Facebook page and TikTok account, @clean.brakpan
