Elections 2024: Residents share their service delivery frustrations

The Herald extends an invitation to all residents to highlight service delivery issues.

With an eye on the upcoming elections, the Brakpan Herald invited residents to speak up about their service delivery concerns.

While much attention may be focused on electing national and provincial leadership, it’s crucial not to overlook the issues within our town and neighbourhoods.

By shedding light on these local concerns, residents can make more informed decisions about the leadership they elect to represent their interests at a broader level.

• Lorraine Gericke writes:
My biggest concern is the grass in the parks and the fields, and the fact it hasn’t been cut in a very long time.

It’s looking untidy and it is dangerous as well because people can sit and watch the houses and even attack others.

The worse case scenario is snakes. I had a snake in my house a few weeks ago when it was very hot. I know we were told that money must be authorised to be able to cut the grass but I think it is a very serious concern.

The town will immediately look better if the parks and fields, especially in Brakpan North, are cut and cleaned up.

After all, a clean town is equal to a safer town.

• Theresa Burdett writes:
Anywhere in town where there are no built areas is a disaster. From the top of Brakpan right out to Gedex mine (Sherwood Gardens) it is just long grass and bushes. Anywhere there is open veld is a disaster.

Illegal miners live in the bush adjacent to the mine. Apparently there are very deep holes in the bush. Everywhere it is dirty with paper, plastic and other litter.

People have no pride any more. This used to be the garden town of the East Rand. Council cut down dead trees and just left the branches. So who is supposed to clean up after them?

I make a point of picking up any rubbish on my pavement. If every person would do the same it would make a difference already. It costs you nothing to be clean.

Raise your children to keep everywhere clean. Give them a plastic bag to put their rubbish in and teach them to not just litter the streets.

Teach them to place their bag in a bin. It should be a school subject.
