Intoxicated driver nabbed with illegal gun and ammo

The man claimed the gun was gifted to him by his late grandmother.

A 29-year-old man found himself in double trouble when he was found to be driving under the influence, as well as in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The man was arrested by EMPD Overload Control Unit officers in Dalpark on Monday evening.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers were conducting a crime prevention operation when they stopped the driver of a blue Toyota minibus.

“As the driver alighted the kombi, he could not stand properly and there was a strong smell of alcohol,” said Thepa.

“The breathalyser was put into action and the motorist was found to be over the stipulated limit.

“He was body-searched and officers found a 9mm firearm with the serial number filed off and three live rounds of ammunition.

“The driver alleged that the firearm belonged to his late uncle and was given to him by his late grandmother.”

The handcuffed suspect was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for a blood sample to be drawn and was then detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

The seized firearm and ammunition were also booked in at the police station, and the minibus was impounded.
