Brakpan SPCA cautions against buying pets from roadside sellers
The society has requested that sightings of people selling animals on the roadside be immediately reported.
The Brakpan SPCA has observed a notable increase in reports regarding the sale of animals, particularly puppies, on roadsides and street corners.
In all three incidents documented recently, the animals were impounded and necessary steps were taken.
Further investigation by the SPCA revealed that the sellers originated from outside the Brakpan area and were enlisting local teenagers to facilitate these sales to the public.
“We strongly urge the public not to purchase any animals being sold in this manner or engage with the sellers. Instead, contact the SPCA immediately to allow us to take appropriate action,” said SPCA manager Tamaryn Lombard.

“We will also collaborate with various stakeholders in our community to address and eliminate the illegal sale of animals in public spaces.”
Members of the public are reminded that purchasing these animals inadvertently creates a market that perpetuates the issue.
“We express our gratitude to the public for refraining from supporting these illegal sellers and for reporting incidents to enable us to act in the best interests of the animals involved,” said Lombard.
If members of the community see anyone selling animals on the roadside or street corners, report it to the SPCA:

“The public act as our eyes and ears, please report illegal activities relating to animals,” concluded Lombard.
