Muriel Brand learning disability athletes sparkle
From the large group that participated in the Prestige event, two broken records and a large batch of medals were achieved.
Learners from Muriel Brand School’s learning disability (LD) department have recently excelled in their athletic endeavours.
The school was among 17 others that participated in the 2025 Prestige athletics on March 11 at the Boksburg Stadium.
The athletes scooped three gold medals, 11 silver and 13 bronze. One of the athletes, Lefa Masilela, broke a record in the boys U15 long jump, qualifying him for the SA High Schools and LSEN Track and Field Championships.
This event will take place at the Mangaung Athletics Stadium from April 2 to 5 in Bloemfontein. He also was named Victor Ludorum for the senior boys’ track.
“This is an incredible milestone for our school as we have not been part of the LD SA championships in over 11 years,” said Siphiwe Mkuzo, the LD athletics coordinator at the school.
Another athlete that excelled is Mvelo Manzini, who also broke a long jump record. Chevon Stembull also bagged a Victrix Ludorum award for the senior girls track, and Clareen Papenfus bagged the same award but for field.
