Security guard shot protecting railway lines from cable thieves

Railway infrastructure continues to be targeted by criminals.

A security guard was shot during an encounter with a gang of cable thieves in Sallies Village on Sunday evening.

According to SAPS information, the victim and a female colleague were on duty patrolling along the railway lines near 15th Road when they were confronted by a group of five armed men.

The gunmen instructed the guards to lie down, with one firing a shot at the victim, hitting him in the stomach.

The thieves then proceeded to cut and steal copper cables. Police were notified of the shooting at about 21:00.

The injured guard was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The female guard was unharmed. Cases of attempted murder and armed robbery are under investigation.
