Brakpan parkrun celebrates birthday

The event has hosted over 200 runs since its inception in 2018.

Dewald Bekker established Brakpan parkrun on April 21, 2018, and celebrated its birthday on April 19. The parkrun, which started on the municipal grounds around the Jan Smuts Dam before moving to the grounds of the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre, has held 261 events.

Throughout those 261 events, runners completed a combined 44 010km and bettered 1 370 new personal best times.

“Today (April 19), we celebrated Brakpan parkrun’s birthday, and on April 26 and 27 we will celebrate Freedom Day with events on both dates where runners can wear their South African colours with their running outfits,” said Madalane Becker, the current event coordinator.

The top five finishers on April 19 are:

1. Johannes Jacobus at 25:28 minutes.

2. Chris Burger at 31:13.

3. Kim Rosslee at 36:26.

4. Ashley Joubert at 36:30.

5. Ken Swettenham at 42:21.
