Grootvlei Golden Girls launch first youth netball tournament in Brakpan

Grootvlei Golden Girls are to host their first netball tournament on October 11 at Hoërskool Stoffberg in Brakpan, with divisions for U9 to U15 teams.

Springs-based Grootvlei Golden Girls (Triple G) will host its first netball tournament on October 11. The tournament will be played at Hoërskool Stoffberg in Brakpan, with games starting at 08:00 and ending at 16:00.

Head coach Mapule Makhonjwa told the Springs Advertiser that they are inviting teams from local schools, community clubs, and nearby areas to participate in the tournament.

She also welcomed teams with varying skill levels and from different age groups.

The affiliation fee is R300 per team of 10. The deadline for registration is September 15, and there will be a limit of 10 teams in each division of the U9s, U11s, U13s, and U15s.

Makhonjwa added that the tournament aims to uplift the girls’ morale and confidence by providing a platform for them to showcase their skills, build teamwork, and develop a sense of achievement.

“Our team was inspired to host this tournament by the enthusiasm and love that the girls have for participating in netball tournaments. The smiles on their faces and the sense of camaraderie among the teams were inspiring.

“We wanted to create a similar experience for our community, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, promote sportsmanship, and bring the locals together through netball,” she said.

Makhonjwa said that with the tournament, she aimed to show parents, coaches and society that the team is committed to creating a secure and nurturing place for girls to grow through sport.

She added that it would keep them away from negative influences and help them develop a lifelong passion for sports.

Spectators can expect an exciting day of netball action, with teams competing in a fun and competitive environment.

“We are glad to welcome spectators to the tournament, although our primary focus is on building trust and relationships within the netball fraternity, including parents, coaches, and the community.

“Access to the venue will be limited due to space constraints. Nevertheless, we are excited to share this experience with as many supporters as possible, and spectators are welcome to attend without an entry fee,” said Makhonjwa.

She said the winning teams will receive trophies, medals, and certificates:
• First: Trophies, gold medals, and certificates

• Second: Silver medals and certificates

• Third: Bronze medals and certificates.
