SPAR Womens Challenge Jozi set to light up Joburg streets

From elite athletes to first-time walkers, the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi returns to Marks Park this Sunday, a celebration of strength, spirit, and community.

Excitement is building as thousands of women prepare to descend on Marks Parks Sports Club in Emmarentia for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi on October 5.

Known as Johannesburg’s most beautiful race, it has become a staple on the city’s sporting and social calendar, drawing more than 10 000 participants.

The race, which offers both 5km and 10km distances, is more than just a run; it’s a celebration of women, fitness, and community spirit.

Families, walkers, first-timers, and seasoned runners will take to the streets together under this year’s banner theme: #Twenty20Thrive.

While the atmosphere promises colour, fun, and camaraderie, the front of the pack is shaping up to be just as captivating. Defending champion Glenrose Xaba has already written her name into the history books.

With four victories from four starts this season, she has wrapped up the 2025 SPAR Grand Prix title ahead of schedule, securing an unbeatable 115 points. In doing so, she becomes the first black athlete to win the Grand Prix three times, adding to her crowns in 2018 and 2024.

Despite having nothing left to prove in the standings, Xaba will be gunning for something extra special: A clean sweep of all five races in the series.

She won’t be alone on the start line. Adding firepower to the Johannesburg leg is crowd favourite Gerda Steyn, who has confirmed her participation.

Her presence ensures Sunday’s 10km will be fiercely contested for spectators lining the streets.

As the clock ticks down to the 08:00 start, the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi once again promises to blend elite athleticism with community celebration. Whether chasing medals or memories, Joburg’s women are ready to shine.
