Road through Plastic City closed, motorists forced to detour

While the road was closed and vehicles redirected, the surrounding area remained calm.

The road through the Plastic City informal settlement was closed today (Tuesday), forcing motorists to take alternative routes.

The reason for the closure remains unclear.

The Brakpan Herald observed thick smoke billowing from within the settlement, in the area previously razed by fire.

Sounds of activity could be heard coming from inside the settlement.

As vehicles were being redirected, people were seen wandering the streets. There was no sign of panic, and the area appeared calm.

When the Herald asked EMPD officers stationed at the blocked entrance near the traffic circle for information, they were tight-lipped and said they had no idea what was going on.

Occupants of the traffic circle, known as Plastic Circle, also remained in the area, which appeared calm and orderly.
