UPDATE: Prepare to be without power: Brakpan faces multi-day outage after storm damage

Brakpan’s widespread power outage was caused by storm-induced damage to oil-insulated cables. Restoration is estimated for Friday afternoon.

Ward 97 Clr Brandon Pretorius has confirmed that the City of Ekurhuleni’s energy department is aware of the power outage currently affecting the Brakpan CBD, Vulcania, and surrounding areas.

Brakpan has experienced a widespread power outage following a heavy storm last night (November 24).
Pretorius told the Brakpan Herald the outage stems from equipment failure.

“The department has confirmed that following heavy rainfall, a fault occurred at the Vulcania substation, resulting in damage to oil-insulated feeder cables and panels linked to the Van Eck substation,” he said.

“Technical teams are sourcing the required material and spares, and are on-site to begin with the necessary repairs and electrical testing.”

“Residents are assured that restoration efforts are underway, and the estimated restoration timeframe is based on the visual assessments conducted so far.

“We will continue to provide updates as work progresses and as feedback is received.”

According to Pretorius, the current estimated restoration time is 16:00 on Friday.
