Heavy rains over the past few days have caused extensive flooding in many areas around the City of Ekurhuleni, filling rivers, streams, and open trenches.

Authorities are warning that the rising water levels pose serious risks, particularly to children and vulnerable members of the community.

“Many children still walk to and from school on their own, often crossing swollen streams. We urge parents and guardians to accompany them at all times to ensure their safety,” said William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

“With the final exams over and some pupils spending time at home, drowning is a real threat when children are left alone near rivers, dams, or swimming pools.

“The upcoming festive season also raises concern, as social gatherings around swimming pools, lakes, dams, and rivers are expected to increase,” he added.

Ntladi also warned that these situations could put lives at risk, particularly for those who cannot swim.

“Summer is a fun time with great weather, but swimming can be dangerous. Swimming lessons alone do not prevent drowning because children need constant supervision whenever they are in or around water. We urge parents to monitor their children and be aware of their whereabouts near water bodies.

“By following basic water safety precautions, accidents can be prevented, ensuring a safe and enjoyable summer for all.”
