Relief effort launched for Mgongo residents after devastating storm

Families in the Mgongo informal settlement were left without shelter, food, and clothing after a destructive storm, prompting Brakpan SAPS and partners to step in with aid.

Brakpan SAPS recently joined hands with the Bold and Brave Youth Foundation for a project aimed at assisting community members of the Mgongo informal settlement who were affected by last week’s damaging storm.

The heavy rain destroyed shacks and left some families stranded with no shelter, food, and clothes.

“The garden that was started in the informal settlement by women who are trying to empower themselves by growing vegetables and selling them was also partially destroyed by the storm,” said Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“A call for donations of clothes, blankets, and non-perishable food was made to local businesses and faith-based organisations.”

Buthelezi, members from the youth foundation and CPF members then visited the settlement, where they distributed clothes and blankets to affected families.

“The donations were appreciated, even though they were not enough. As the stormy weather continues, and more families are in desperate need of help, we would like to convey a message to local businesses, faith-based organisations, and the community at large to kindly assist with donations of clothes, blankets and food,” said Buthelezi.

She expressed gratitude to the Adullam Biker Ecclesia Church for their generous donation, to community members who donated clothes and to the CPF members who assisted during the project.
