Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Man discovered with severe head injuries on Hamilton Avenue

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from December 5 to 7.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – Tools valued at thousands of rand were stolen from a bakkie parked at an address along Essenhout Street in Dalpark.

• A home in Short Street, Kenleaf, was burgled of TVs, a computer, TV boxes (streaming devices), clothing and other valuables.

Saturday – A length of pipe was stolen from the pump station along Bertram Street in Sherwood Gardens.

A security guard on duty at the facility made the discovery just after 18:00. While patrolling the premises, he noticed the station door standing open.

• A female motorist was robbed of her vehicle by hijackers posing as metro police officers near Dalpark. The victim, driving a white Hyundai i20, was travelling along Heidelberg Road en route to Tsakani at about 13:00.

Near Elsburg Road, she saw two men wearing brown uniforms and a van that appeared to be a metro police vehicle. One of the man gestured to her to stop, and she pulled over on the side of the road.

She was approached by one of the men who lifted his shirt and showed her a gun concealed in the waistband of his pants. He instructed her to move to the passenger seat.

The victim was then told to lie down on the seat, and the two men climbed in and drove off. After some time, the car stopped. One of the men opened the passenger door and blindfolded the victim with a cloth.

She was taken out of the car and placed into another vehicle. When the car stopped again after driving for a long time, the cloth was removed from her face, but then put on again.

The victim was pulled out of the car and she heard it driving off. She removed the cloth and sought help from passing motorists.

A man who stopped to help her told her he was going to Tsakani and would take her to the police station. In addition to the car, the hijackers also made off with victim’s work cellphone, her personal cellphone and house keys.

Sunday – An attempted murder case was opened after a severely injured man was found by a patrolling police officer along Hamilton Avenue.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood at around 02:15.

The officer called an ambulance, as the victim had sustained severe head injuries and his face was swollen beyond recognition.

The ambulance arrived and transported the victim to the Far East Rand Hospital.

The victim was unable to speak.

A piece of basin and a concrete cement block were found at the scene, both bearing bloodstains. Both were seized as evidence.
