Brakpan news of yesteryear: A glimpse back to December 5, 2014

Let’s rewind the clock and uncover the stories that made headlines in Brakpan years ago.

We’re dusting off the Brakpan Herald of December 5, 2014, and diving into the headlines that once had everyone talking.

• Butchery’s drop safe blown up
An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from Jansen’s Meat Market after a drop safe on the premises was blown up with explosives. The bombing took place between 16:00 on Saturday and 07:30 on Monday morning.

The butcher was closed at the end of business day on Saturday, and the theft and bombing were discovered when the shop opened for business on Monday morning.

The incident did not affect the butchery’s trading on Monday and the shop was open for business as usual.
A case of contravening the Explosives Act was opened at the police station.

• Brand vernietig kamers, mense nou dakloos
‘n Brand wat Sondagmiddag in Gladstonelaan uitgebreek het, het veroorsaak dat ten minste vyf mense dakloos gelaat is.

Die brand het onstaan in kamers wat op ‘n perseel in diè straat gebou is. Volgens inligting het die brand net na 3nm uitgebreek en drie brandweerwaens is na die toneel om die vlamme onder beheer te kry.

Die vuur is sowat ‘n uur later heeltemal geblus. Niemand is beseer nie.

• Man beaten to death
Brakpan police were called to a tavern over the weekend, after the body of a 38-year-old Brenthurst man was found.

Officers received a report of a man lying on the ground outside a pub along Wenden Avenue at about 01:30.

On their arrival, they found the man dead on the pavement. It is believed the victim, who lived along Prince George Avenue, was beaten to death. Police arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the murder.

• Man critical after fall
A 44-year-old man was in a critical condition after falling from a ladder on Tuesday afternoon. Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene in Vulcania, and found him lying on the ground.

Reports from the scene indicate that the man fell between 5m to 7m to the ground. The Netcare 1 helicopter was activated to airlift the critically injured man to hospital for urgent medical care.

• United bounce back
After two weeks of Premier League inactivity, United Cricket Club’s Premier XI made a good return to winning ways at home, against Springs Old Boys, on November 30.

According to team manager Des Gamble, the win has boosted the club into sixth position on the Eastern Premier League table and takes them one step closer to their season-end goal of at least fifth position.
