SPOT continues Plastic City dog rescues
After months of survival against all odds, one of the most fearful dogs has been brought to safety, thanks to patience, perseverance, and the unwavering commitment of SPOT.
Ongoing rescue efforts are bringing hope to the remaining dogs still roaming the area formerly known as Plastic City, some of which are currently surviving within the Weltevreden Landfill Site.
According to Sanette Bosman, director of local NPC SPOT (Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team), these dogs have been living in extremely harsh conditions for months, exposed to danger, hunger and illness.
Through patience, perseverance, and unwavering commitment, SPOT has been working to secure the safety of each animal, one by one.
On January 24, Sanette and volunteers Shaun and Brenda Gibson along with Sanette’s son, Brandon, attempted to trap a female Africanis-type dog, described by Sanette as one of the most fearful dogs still on site.
“She is extremely skittish and untrusting, never approaching us as the others do,” said Sanette.

“Although she entered the trap, she did not activate the pressure plate resulting in a failed attempt. A storm was approaching fast and we had to abandon the plan momentarily.”
Refusing to give up, the team returned the following afternoon, and their perseverance paid off. Within 30 minutes, the dog was successfully lured into the trap.
“It may sound simple, but every rescue like this requires planning, calmness and patience,” Sanette explained.
“Rushing these dogs only puts them at greater risk.
“Upon being able to get up close, we found her to be heavily covered in ticks, highlighting the ongoing health risks faced by animals living in these conditions.”

The dog was transported to the Brakpan SPCA.
“Seeing her safe was a sigh of relief. It reinforces why we keep going, even when progress feels slow,” Sanette said.
SPOT has confirmed that only a few dogs now remain in the area, and efforts are continuing to ensure each one is safely removed.
“This has never been about quick wins,” Sanette added. “Patience, perseverance, and commitment have been the recipe to help these dogs. Our goal is their ultimate safety, nothing less.”
