UPDATE: Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu confirmed dead following flood incident in Mozambique

The MMC for Transport and Infrastructure, Andile Mngwevu, is confirmed to have died.

The office of Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza confirmed that Andile Mngwevu, the CoE’s MMC for Transport and Infrastructure, has died.

Mngwevu, a Springs resident, was reported missing after the car he was travelling in was swept away by the floodwaters in Chókwè, Mozambique.

He was one of five people in the vehicle at the time. One passenger escaped and survived. News of Mngwevu’s death emerged yesterday following a lengthy search.

Xhakaza expressed sadness at Mngwevu’s death, who was also the leader of government business in the city.

“Mngwevu was a committed public servant who dedicated his life to improving mobility, infrastructure development and service delivery for the people he served. His passing is a profound loss to the city, the council and the community,” Xhakaza said.

He said Mngwevu, a critical member of the mayoral committee, paid close attention to detail and ensured the protection of the community’s interests.

“On behalf of the city’s leadership, the mayor extends condolences to the Mngwevu family, friends, colleagues and those affected by this tragic loss.

“We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time and mourn the loss of a leader whose contribution to public service will forever be remembered,” he said.

Xhakaza also conveyed condolences to the families of the three others travelling with Mngwevu.
