Fallen soldiers to be honoured at museum memorial
The Springs Mine and Military Museum started with the constructing of its Wall of Remembrance to honour fallen soldiers, including South African troops who died during the 2013 Battle of Bangui.
The Springs Mine and Military Museum’s Wall of Remembrance is taking shape following the installation of its main stone on January 29.
Ben West Memorials in Brakpan manufactured and donated the granite memorial while Verneen van Deventer from Den Akker donated wreaths to add colour to the site.
Museum founder Tony da Cruz said the wall will serve as a lasting tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, including South African troops who died during the 2013 Battle of Bangui.
A memorial dedicated to the soldiers who died in the Battle of Bangui will be unveiled soon. Da Cruz’s plans to host an honorary parade and memorial service in remembrance of the soldiers who lost their lives during the battle.
The Battle of Bangui took place during the civil war in the Central African Republic (CAR), where South Africa deployed troops in 2013 as part of a bilateral agreement to support and train the CAR army and assist with military capacity building.
Thirteen South African soldiers died during the battle, while 27 others were wounded. Da Cruz expressed his gratitude to the donors for their continued support.
