WATCH: Vigil held for Wiandre Pretorius

The vigil was held at his home, followed by a visit to the petrol station where he took his own life.

On the evening of February 13, friends, family, and colleagues of Wiandre Pretorius gathered at the Astron Energy petrol station in Dalview, where the 41-year-old former police reservist took his own life.

Pretorius survived an alleged assassination attempt on February 5, only to take his own life at the petrol station two days later.

He was implicated in proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry by Marius ‘Vlam’ van der Merwe, also known as Witness D, in the murder of Emmanuel Mbense in Sallies Village in 2022.

Before the gathering at the petrol station, a vigil was held at Pretorius’s Van Dyk Park home in Boksburg.

A motorcade then travelled to the petrol station, where his father spoke, followed by a final salute and a minute of silence.

“Let the blameless throw the first stone. We will never forget that he flew above others like an eagle and was a phenomenal person,” said his father.

“My boy, ‘dedda’ says goodbye tonight. People, let’s respect each other. Let us salute tonight, rest in peace, ‘seuna’.”

After the formalities, friends and families placed bouquets of flowers on the spot where Pretorius died.
