EMPD officers embark on drive to get rid of used tyres in the city
Recent protest action, which saw demonstrators burning tyres and damaging the road surface, triggered the by-law campaign.
EMPD officers in all regions have embarked on a by-laws campaign aimed at getting rid of used/waste tyres.
The ongoing operation, which is also aimed at ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Management Waste Act (Act 59 of 2008) and raising awareness about the dangerous practice to both humans and the environment, was triggered by protest action where some demonstrators burnt tyres and left the roadway badly damaged.
According to the city’s integrated waste management by-laws, burning of waste tyres in public is illegal, contaminates the environment and carries a hefty fine of R10 000 or imprisonment of a period not exceeding six months.
“The EMPD, Waste Bureau, and Department of Forestry Fishers and Environment will continue to fight this act of lawlessness,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa.
“Protesters or demonstrators are urged not to damage any infrastructure while picketing. Perpetrators will be brought to book and face the full might of the law.”
