Between September 14 and 15, the EMPD Eastern Region Second-hand Goods Unit in conjunction with the Energy Enhancement Team, conducted a mini-operation in Brakpan and Benoni focusing on previously disconnected residential customers.

According to the EMPD, the operation was aimed at verifying compliance and addressing illegal reconnections.

While four residential premises were found to be still disconnected and compliant, several fines were issued to non-compliant residential customers.

Five “first” fines were issued, along with four “third” fines. The value of the fines is R131 983.

The department continues to conduct unannounced operations, to curb electricity theft, illegal connections and non-compliance.

Customers are urged to ensure their accounts are in good standing and to refrain from illegally reconnecting electricity, as this poses a serious safety risk and carries hefty penalties.
