Man dies in flooded Stoffberg Avenue subway

Rescue efforts are still underway as it is not known whether the driver was alone in the vehicle.

The body of a man has been recovered from the flooded Stoffberg Avenue subway.

Heavy rain flooded the underpass this afternoon (February 26).

According to City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi, it is alleged the man attempted to drive through the flooded subway.

His vehicle became submerged in water and the driver is believed to have drowned.

Rescue teams from both the Brakpan and Springs fire stations, as well as the SAPS Water Wing Unit are on the scene.

Ntladi added the man’s vehicle is still stuck between the subway’s pillars.

“Rescue is ongoing. It is unknown whether he was alone in the vehicle or not,” he said.
