Mall awareness conducted by Brakpan SAPS spotlights gender-based violence and femicide
The Brakpan SAPS, along with other stakeholders, spread the word on platforms to report GBV-F, among other related topics.
Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer, Constable Audrey Buthelezi, along with several stakeholders, conducted a gender-based violence and femicide (GBV-F) awareness campaign at the Mall@Carnival on March 6.
Buthelezi was joined by Brakpan SAPS Sector 2 manager Warrant Officer Johan Hanekom, the CPF, Ekurhuleni Women’s Directorate, the Department of Health, the Department of Community Services, the Far East Rand Hospital Crisis Centre, and the Bold and Brave Youth Foundation (NPO).
“The objective was to spread the word on GBV and provide platforms to report it, and this is due to the high prevalence of GBV within our communities,” said Buthelezi.

“Conducting awareness on GBV is part of the SAPS GBV&F Action Plan, which is aimed at enhancing the regulatory framework, improving the capability of SAPS members, and ensuring compliance.
“The awareness included sharing of prevention strategies, advising the public on our improved victim support services, and the professionalism of SAPS responses.”
During the outreach, more than 400 pamphlets were distributed, and individuals had the opportunity to ask questions and receive clarity from social workers and SAPS members. GBV-F awareness is crucial to addressing the root causes of these crimes and ensuring that SAPS members are equipped to respond effectively.
