Panne warm up for regional league

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV played a friendly fixture in Pretoria on Saturday against Pretoria Police in preparation for the Valke Peregrine League that kicks off in two weeks time.

Following the recent elimination in the pool stage of the 2014 Cell C Community Cup “Panne”, the reigning champions, will be looking to bounce back in the regional league.

With this in mind, the club travelled to Pretoria with 13 regular starters missing from the match day squad, including loose forwards Wickus van den Berg, Theo Mynhardt and Jacques Niewenhuis among others.

This gave the coaching team the chance to field some of the players who did not feature in the Community Cup as well as a few u-21 players in order to see how they fared at senior level.

The team played a solid game but lost 19-7 to their northern opposition.

No penalty kicks were taken in the match as the team tested its ability running the ball.

The club’s u-21 team played against Pretoria Bobbies and won their game 12-7.

The Valke League will begin on Saturday, May 10.
