Brakpan’s Shark

Former Brakpan resident made his Sharks Currie Cup debut recently.

Laerskool Môrewag can be proud of the fact that one of their own has represented the Sharks in this year’s Currie Cup competition.

Wiehan Hay, a former pupil of the school and a former Dalpark resident, made his debut for the Durban franchise earlier in the month, in the Sharks’ 18-21 loss to Griquas in the Absa Currie Cup, at King’s Park Stadium, on Saturday, September 6.

The lock forward was promoted to the senior team from the Sharks’ U-21 Academy and was, unfortunately, injured about 28 minutes into his first senior appearance, with an AC joint injury that has kept him on the sidelines for three weeks.

Despite the injury, the former Hoërskool Jeugland (Kempton Park) pupil was pleased to have finally got his chance in head coach Brad McLeod-Henderson’s starting XV.

“It [his debut] was awesome,” he told the Herald recently.

“It is something for which I have been waiting a long time, so it was really great to get onto the field.”

Speaking about his injury during his debut match, Hay commented: “Getting injured early on was not the best way to start life in the senior team, but my shoulder is a lot better now and I am hoping to be selected again soon.”

When asked what life was like growing up in Brakpan, the Sharks player said: “It was great.

“Some of my best memories in Brakpan were of when I played for the Bobbies Junior Rugby Club, as well as playing club cricket for Brakpan Cricket Club.

“I have also had great support from people in Brakpan and I am grateful for that.”
