Riders eat up the kilometres

The Transvaal Galvanisers Mountain Bike Race took place in Dalpark Extension One, at the Van Dyk Dam, opposite Carnival City, on Sunday, November 23.

The event was sanctioned by Cycling South Africa (CSA) and provided a flat, quick route for riders, a number of whom had participated in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge a week earlier.

The race, which consisted of a 50km, a 35km and a 10km route, was hosted by the Springs Park Rotary Club’s bus project and proceeds raised were in aid of Muriel Brand School.

On the 50km and 30km route riders were treated to a unique 55m floating bridge that was erected over the dam.

Marthinus Steyn was the first mountain bike rider home in the 50km open men’s category, in a time of two hours, eight minutes and 35 seconds, at an average speed of 23.33km/h.

He was followed by GD Kotzer, who came in in two hours and 11 minutes.

The first veteran male home was Paolo Pellizzon, while Michael Gericke was the first master male home.

The first woman home in the open female category was Tanielle Mandy, in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and 43 seconds.

Sarah Watermeyer came in as the first veteran female in the 50km race.
