Win in Boksburg gives United the lead again

Things continue to get interesting in the Eastern Premier League with the completion of every match.

United Cricket Club’s Premier XI again took the lead on the league table after a seven-wicket win over Boksburg Cricket Club at Prince George Park on Sunday.

It was certainly a good result considering that Kempton Park Cricket Club’s elite side were defeated in an intense match away to Benoni Northerns Cricket Club that allowed for the Brakpan-based outfit to stretch their lead.

On Sunday, at PG Park, skipper Justin Gamble’s men took care of business despite a late start in a rain-reduced game.

Bowling first, Boksburg’s batsmen kept United in the field for 41 overs and posted 160 runs on the scoreboard until they were eventually all bowled out.

Freddie Whitehorne top scored for Boksburg with 52 runs, while the spin of Gamble (3/32 in nine overs) and Eden Links (3/22 in nine overs) did the trick for United with the ball.

Seamer Kevin Hinton also bagged good figures of 2/12 in six overs which included two maidens.

Gamble and Links were enjoying their day out in the middle and followed their good bowling performances with an equally good batting display.

Gamble (54 not out) and Links (46 not out) carried the team home in the 25th over with only three United batsmen having fallen before them.

A massive encounter now awaits the team at Hosking Park on Sunday, February 28, as they welcome resurgent defending champions Benoni Northerns to their home pitch.

The match is expected to be a real spectacle and is scheduled to start at 9.30am.

  • In another result on Sunday, United’s Promotion XI were defeated by four wickets away to Benoni Northerns.
