Pedal power at the classic

The 2016 Carnival City Macsteel National Cycle Classic took place on Sunday morning at Carnival City.

Held for the 32nd time, the always popular race attracted big numbers as a number of cyclists set their sights on the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

All proceeds from the classic go to the Germiston Rotary’s community projects, the Rotary Foundation, Germiston Wheelers charity projects and the development of amateur cycling in South Africa.

Team Telkom’s Reynard Butler came out on top in the 120km elite race beating Bradley Potgieter (Roadcover) and Tyler Day (Westvaal) into second and third respectively.

Butler stormed home in a time of two hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds to claim first place.

In the elite women category it was Heidi Dalton of Team Demacon who took the win from Yzette Oelofse in second and Charlene du Preez (Clover) in third in a bunch sprint.

It was announced that the classic would be held again on November 6 and will take place on that date every year thereafter.
