Dan’s the man at Brakpan Mines

After a tough week for renowned sports writer Dan Retief following an 'insensitive' tweet about the South African cricket team, the veteran scribe took some time to talk about his real passion - rugby - at a breakfast and talk organised by Brakpan Mines Bowling Club on Saturday, February 20.

Other special guests who attended the talk were Springbok winger from the 1950s and Rugby League Hall of Famer Tom van Vollenhoven (80) and the club’s South African national bowls player Thinus Oelofse.

Van Vollenhoven enjoyed a prolific rugby league career with English club St Helens and is still to this day a celebrity in the English town.

He is also known for scoring the first hat trick by a South African rugby union player, against the British Lions in 1955.

Retief shared a few stories of days gone by and also gave incredible insight into the new 18-team Super Rugby season, which kicks off this weekend.

He also provided some opinion of the status quo of South African rugby in general.
