Juniors continue to fly
Members of the Brakpan Racing Pigeon Club did exceptionally well within the GPU during the past weekend.
The Brakpan Racing Pigeon Club is competing in a strong Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) where an average of 2 500 pigeons are liberated on a weekly basis.
On July 15 the club’s pigeons were liberated at Smithfield, an average distance of 480km from home.
Members of the Brakpan Racing Pigeon Club did exceptionally well within the GPU during the past weekend.
Results are:
• Young birds: 1 Tewis Beukes, also fifth overall in the GPU; 2 David Pretorius, 3 Louise du Plooy (junior member), 25th in the GPU.
• Open birds: 1 Xander Pretorius (junior member), also second overall in the GPU; 2 Louis du Plooy, 13th in the GPU; 3 Louise du Plooy (junior member), 22nd in the GPU.
“The achievement of Xander Pretorius dare not be underestimated,” said club chairman Etienne van der Walt.
“The Blue Bar Cock was bred by Egbert O’Kelly from Boksburg, who is a champion pigeon racer with some of the best imported racing pigeons in South Africa.
“The two racing pigeons that did so well for Louise du Plooy were bred by Andre Smit from imported racing pigeons.
“The achievements by Xander and Louise, both junior members of the club, signal two important aspects: firstly, the willingness of senior pigeon fanciers to assist new members and, secondly, that the sport of racing pigeons is alive, well and growing in Brakpan.
“Well done to all members of the club who achieved excellent positions in the GPU.”
