Safety app aims to connect communities

Ever wanted a mobile app that is focused on creating a safer and more connected community?

Former Brakpan Primary School learner Johannes Manaka (24) is one of the co-founders, together with Tshepo Nage and Onalerona Mphuthi, of such a mobile app.

“The Sechaba mobile app was inspired by the need to have an easy access mobile portal that serves the core needs of people,” said Johannes.

“One of those needs is calling for help when you are in distress at home and who better to attend to your distress call than your neighbours.”

Johannes added that Sechaba enables community members to build social safety circles.

The app has also made the numbers for emergency services providers, such as the police and fire brigade, easily accessible for users.

“It is fundamentally meant to address the delayed response of police in house break-in incidents,” said Tshepo.

“The objective is to enable people to build safe and connected communities.”

When asked what difficulties the team have faced whilst creating this app, they mentioned that the biggest difficulties were not technical.

“It was, and still is, getting timely information from local officials regarding notices and announcements,” added Johannes.

There is also an obituary section on the app that allows members to find details about a funeral such as a person to contact, GPS directions and burial dates.

The app is free to download.

“Download the app for yourself, loved ones and get your neighbours on board so you can build safety circles and stay safe,” concluded Johannes.
