Keeper saves the day

The match started with the home side on top as they created chances.

Brakpan Spurs’ goalkeeper Tumelo Sibanyoni saved the day when the local side beat Elsburg 2-1 at the Brakpan Sports Grounds on Saturday. The shot-stopper saved a penalty in the last play of the match to earn the local side three league points.

A pass from Ayanda Ncube set up captain Jabulani Munene, who hit a hard, low shot to open the scoring.

Spurs continued to dominate for the remainder of the first half and were unlucky not to have extended their lead.

The second half was different as Elsburg came into the match. They equalised from an indirect free kick.

It did not take long for Brakpan to regain their lead. A free kick by the other Munene, Sidumo, saw the hosts edge ahead once again.

Elsburg tried to fight back and there was still some drama coming up.

With the visitors pushing for an equaliser, defender Lungelo Mathebula committed a foul in the 18-yard area, giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty.

It then became Sibanyoni’s moment as he saved the spot kick in the dying minutes of the game.

The win sees Spurs move up to seventh place on the log.

Their next match is away from home against Olympia on Saturday.
