What a year of Brakpan sport: July to December 2019 highlights
The year 2019 produced many highlights for local sports stars.
Here are the noteworthy moments for the months July to December.
July
• Brendan Lesar stunned mixed martial arts legend Garreth McLellan by knocking him out in the first round of their middleweight championship at EFC 80, at Carnival City. This was McLellan’s first fight in South Africa in five years, after competing overseas in the UFC.

• Eagles Boxing Club’s Chantel Erasmus became the South African champion for the third time in Rustenberg. The 19-year-old has been a shining star for her club.
• Ten u-12 players from Brakpan Rugby Club were selected to represent the national youth Rhino Squad in matches against Scotland, Wales and England. The squad was selected after Rhino Week in Vanderbijlpark.
August
• Bosman Stadium hosted the Women’s Rugby World Cup qualifiers between South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar and Uganda. The Boks won the tournament and qualified for the tournament in New Zealand.
• Brakpan’s Karin Woest was selected to represent South Africa at the 2020 u-21 Action Cricket World Cup in Australia. Woest has already played for the country at the u-18 and u-21 world cups before.
• Dalview’s Juandre Johnson was selected to play for South Africa’s u-17 cricket side at the St Davids Festival.
September
• State Mines Country Club’s Casey Jarvis showed character when he fought back from an opening round 81 to finish in the top 70 at the AJGA Junior Players Championships in Florida, USA.
October
• Themba Gorimbo beat Luke Michael to claim the EFC Welterweight title at EFC 82 at Carnival City. The co-main event of the night saw Simon Biyong beating Quinton Rossouw by a second round knockout.
• Following problems with the state of the grounds at the Brakpan Sports Grounds, United Cricket Club relocated to Benoni.
• Nolan Hoffman was at his best as he won the annual Macsteel Cycle Classic at Carnival City. Veteran Lynette Burger rolled back the years as she won the women’s event.
November
• Brakpan’s Carmen Delport was brilliant as she won the Gauteng East Tennis Tournament. The youngster was too good as she won the u-10 category.
• Bosman Stadium hosted another international event. The local grounds were the venue for the African Sevens Tournament which were also used as Olympic qualifiers. Kenya emerged victorious from the event.
• Christopher Anthony and Christopher Thela brought home gold from the KWF Karate World Cup. Anthony won the men’s open division while Thela was victorious in the veterans (age 50-59) category.

December
• Tadpoles Swimming Academy hosted a gala which saw youngsters between ages two and 11 compete, at Brakpan Swimming Pool.
