Youngsters ready to tee off

The enthusiasm of the players was clear to see as the youngsters were happily working on their swings at the driving range in the scorching heat last Saturday.

Although it is not yet quite clear when the Ekurhuleni junior golf league tournaments will begin, the Kenneth Dube Academy at the Royal Oak Country Club has been getting ready for action.

“We are improving the swings and getting everything up to standard and making sure they are ready for any tournament that comes up,” said Dube.

“They are very ready to play at any tournament.”

Dube has been working hard with young players at the club on Fridays and Saturdays.

The academy has produced a number of players who went on to play the sport professionally.

“It’s nice to see youngsters growing up and seeing that they are the product of the golf academy,” said Dube, who is also Royal Oak’s club manager.

The enthusiasm of the players was clear to see as the youngsters were happily working on their swings at the driving range in the scorching heat last Saturday.

“Golf is a sport that takes everyone away from bad activities such as drugs,” said Dube.

“If you leave them at home you never know what’s going to happen. You go to work and they go outside with other children and they are exposed to things they are not supposed to be exposed to. Playing golf is good for the children.”

One of the children who loves to play golf is 11-year-old Thando Qibi, who is highly rated by Dube.

Thando Qibi dreams of being like his favourite player, Tiger Woods.

“I’ve been playing golf for about seven years,” said the youngster.

“I got into the game through my father. Every weekend he would come here and I would join him so he bought me plastic clubs.

“I hit a bit and I enjoyed it and then it became more serious. I’m enjoying the game and want to get to know it better.”

The enthusiastic youngster dreams of being like his favourite player, Tiger Woods.

“I practise hard. I come here every two days and I just try to get better every day and make it as far as I can,” said Thando.
