Giant bullfrog rescued in Sonneveld just in time for World Frog Day
Discovered on a residential property, Ferdie was checked, cleared, and prepared for release into his natural habitat.
While all the love and attention he received didn’t transform him into a prince, a giant bullfrog found on a property in Sonneveld, is safe and sound thanks to the Brakpan SPCA.
The local society received a frantic call from a resident on March 19 about the large amphibian on her premises. With the belief that every creature deserves a chance at safety, a team from the SPCA geared up for the rescue mission.
The bullfrog, later named Ferdie, was carefully relocated from the property to prevent harm Once back at the SPCA, he received a full check-up, and was confirmed to be healthy and unharmed.
His rescue took place on the eve of World Frog Day, which is celebrated annually on March 20.
This global initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of frogs and their critical role in ecosystems. Ferdie will be released into a suitable wetland area, where he can continue to live in a natural environment.
The Giant bullfrog or African bullfrog is native to the East Rand area, with notable populations in various wetland areas.
They are the largest frog species in Africa, and are considered a protected species. The Brakpan SPCA extended its appreciation to staff members involved in Ferdie’s rescue for their commitment and care in handling the situation.
