Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Man abducted, stabbed and burned in boot of car

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from May 1 to 3.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A man was robbed and threatened with a gun in the parking lot of Mall@Carnival. The incident took place at around 15:00.

The victim was approached by three men shortly after parking his vehicle. One of the men pointed a firearm at him and demanded his bank cards, PIN, and cellphone.

The victim complied, and later received a notification that money had been withdrawn from his account.

  • A Brakpan North couple were ambushed by robbers when they arrived at their Van Vollenhoven Street home.

They pulled into the driveway at around 18:30 and the wife exited the vehicle to open the gate. Two men then approached the car, positioning themselves on either side of the vehicle.

One of the men pointed a gun at the husband and ordered him to raise his hands. The gunman demanded to know the whereabouts of the husband’s firearm, to which he replied that it was in a safe.

The robber then opened the car and took a cellphone. He also demanded the car keys, which the husband had thrown on the ground. The gunman picked them up.

The wife, who was at the gate with the second armed man, was robbed of her jewellery, including a necklace, earrings, and rings.

The first robber instructed his accomplice to take her handbag, which he did. A second cellphone was also taken.

The robbers then fled, and were seen throwing items into the yard. They made their getaway in a silver Toyota.

The couple entered their home to cancel their bank cards, and their vehicle keys were later recovered in the yard. An armed robbery docket was opened.

Saturday – Tools were stolen during a break-in at a business along Kitzinger Avenue.

  • Two quad bikes were stolen from a garage at a residence along Hendrik Potgieter Street in Dalview. The gate motor on the property was also damaged.

Sunday – A grey Ford Ranger was stolen from Van der Walt Road in Dalview.

  • A man was stabbed, burned with plastic, robbed and abducted by the occupants of a silver/grey Volkswagen Polo in Dalpark.

The victim disembarked from a taxi on the N17 highway, having travelled from KwaZulu-Natal, and proceeded on foot along Heidelberg Road towards Benoni.

He later stopped near a car dealership along Airport Drive. At around 19:30, the Polo stopped next to him. Two men who were seated in the back of the vehicle climbed out and asked where he was going.

The men then pulled out knives and dragged him to the vehicle. He was searched, and robbed of two cellphones.

The robbers also forced the victim to open his banking app, after which they transferred money from his account.

They took his bank cards, and withdrew additional cash. During the ordeal, the victim sustained a stab wound to his hand. He was also placed in the boot of the vehicle, where he was burned with a plastic material.

He was driven around before eventually being released.

After being dropped off, the victim sought assistance from a motorist and was taken to the Duduza SAPS. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and kidnapping.
