Van Zyl adds cross-country podium to modern pentathlon success

He finished third in the U19 boys' 2km race, while he helped South Africa to the team gold at the Laser Run World Championships in December.

Brakpan resident, Donovan van Zyl went into overdrive, his facial expression telling the story of an athlete determined to make his parents proud after passing them shouting in unison, urging him to find that final gear.

With his mouth slightly open and arm carriage relaxed yet controlled, a spent Van Zyl dug deep, shifting gears on the home straight before unleashing a decisive kick to secure a podium place at the Champions League Cross Country series time trial at Pinnacle College Rynfield on May 10.

Van Zyl powered his way to third place in the U19 boys’ 2km sprint, clocking 06:49.49 to earn valuable points for his team. His performance was fuelled by a strong support system and, above all, an unshakeable belief in himself.

“The race was quite challenging indeed. The course required you to give your best at every moment since the terrain makes for a demanding test. But personally, I felt quite good out there and actually enjoyed every second of the race,” he said.

Representing the Eagles, Van Zyl threw his weight behind the team-based series, highlighting its uniqueness and ability to foster camaraderie among athletes.

“The atmosphere was incredibly awesome during the league on Sunday. The kind of energy you get in events like this is unique; despite the competitive nature, there’s an overwhelming sense of unity among the competitors. All in all, I couldn’t help feeling honoured and privileged to represent our talents on display.”

Looking ahead, the Central Gauteng athlete is focused on maintaining consistency throughout the series.

“My objective is to ensure that everything remains consistent. I’m aiming to capitalise on the fitness level I showed on Sunday through trail work for specific strengthening and maintaining mileage. Now that I’m in good shape, my priority is to keep improving my form,” said Van Zyl.

Meanwhile, the Boxer AC middle-distance runner has already made his mark on the international stage.

He earned his first international medal after helping Team SA secure gold at the UIPM Biathle-Triathle and Laser Run World Championships in Mossel Bay in December.

The multi-talented youngster delivered an outstanding performance in the U19 mixed laser run relay, finishing second overall.

He also placed fourth in the individual event, but ranked among the top three South African finishers, securing team gold for the country. Reflecting on this achievement, Van Zyl said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“It was a proud moment and a once in a lifetime event. It was special.”
