Tutela Family Care Brakpan hosts ‘Sleep in a Box’ event to raise homelessness awareness

Sleeping in cardboard boxes for one winter night gave community members fresh perspective and renewed gratitude for life's basic comforts.

Tutela Family Care Brakpan hosted “Sleep in a Box” on the evening of June 5, during which members of the community were invited to participate in this meaningful initiative aimed at creating awareness and fostering empathy for those who face homelessness and hardship on a daily basis.

The initiative was held in the parking lot of Tutela’s offices along Victoria Avenue.

Tutela expressed appreciation to Freedom Front Plus PR Clr Riaan van Zyl and Kim van Zyl for participating. Trienie Drotschie, CEO for Tutela Family Care head office, also joined.

“She shared an inspiring and heartful message with everyone present. A special word of thanks to our director, Nicolene van der Merwe, who accepted the challenge and spent the night sleeping outside in a box alongside the participants,” said Naomi Mostert, administrative worker for Tutela.

Brakpan SAPS social crime and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthulezi also joined in support of the project.

“Although the fires burned brightly throughout the evening, it was an exceptionally cold winter’s night,” said Mostert.

She explained the purpose of the event was to give participants a small glimpse into the reality faced by many less fortunate individuals in the community who sleep outdoors every night, exposed to the cold, wind and harsh weather conditions.

“One of the most touching moments of the evening was when four homeless community members joined us and found a safe place to sleep near the fire,” said Mostert.

“Their gratitude was deeply moving. Many thanks to Secure Tech Security for remaining on duty throughout the night to ensure everyone’s safety.

“For many people living on the streets, this sense of security is a luxury, as they often have to remain alert and vigilant to protect themselves from theft or attack.

“The following morning, we looked at the world through different eyes. The experience reminded us how fortunate we are to have a warm bed to sleep in and a roof over our heads.

“It has given us a renewed sense of gratitude, and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable members of the community.

“Together, we can make a difference through compassion, kindness and support for those in need.”
