Strong law enforcement presence marks voter registration weekend

Law enforcement maintained a visible presence at voter registration stations throughout Brakpan to protect the electoral process and ensure public safety.

Local police conducted safety and security monitoring at voter registration stations throughout Brakpan over the voter registration weekend (June 20 and 21).

SAPS, EMPD, private security companies and CPF members were ready to ensure that community members were able to take the first step in exercising their constitutional right to vote without disruption.

“Seventeen voting stations were monitored, with 15 graded as low risk, one as medium risk and one as high risk,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer.

“Law enforcement officers were stationed at the voting stations, while others conducted patrols in and around the areas during the two-day registration period.

“The monitoring operation was primarily aimed at protecting IEC officials, safeguarding voter registration stations, and preventing vandalism and protests that could disrupt the registration process.”

Buthelezi added the deployment strategy focused on coordinating security at all voter registration stations, with particular attention given to previously identified hotspots.

“SAPS collaborated with other law enforcement agencies to maintain calm and ensure a swift response to any incidents,” she added.

Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Johanna Ngoma stated that SAPS would maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards individuals or groups attempting to intimidate community members or disrupt the registration process. No criminal incidents were reported at any of the 17 voting stations over the weekend.
