Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Hijackers use fake vehicle fault to lure truck driver into trap

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from May 29 to 31.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A grey Nissan Navara was stolen from the Life Dalview Hospital.

The vehicle was recovered in Klippoortjie, Germiston, in a damaged condition.

  • A TV and a laptop were stolen during a break-in at a home along Talbot Street in Sherwood Gardens.
  • A residence along Prince George Avenue in Brenthurst was burgled of jewellery, a TV, clothes and other valuables.
  • A truck driver fell victim to hijackers along Heidelberg Road (R23) near Withok Estates.

The incident took place at around 13:00 while the driver was en route to Tsakani. While travelling, three vehicles overtook him.

The occupants signalled that there appeared to be a problem with the truck. The driver pulled over at a petrol station near Floors Street to inspect the truck.

After stopping, one of the men from the vehicles approached him and threatened him with a firearm.

The gunman instructed the driver to get into his vehicle. The driver was then tied up with cables.

A second man climbed into the truck and drove off. The driver was taken to various locations before being released in Alrode, Alberton.

Saturday – An electric meter box was stolen from the Brakpan Customer Centre (civic centre).

The box, which was mounted to a wall, was removed and stolen together with the cables connected to the meter.

Sunday – A woman was shot during an attempted hijacking along Location Road near Brakpan North. Read more in this week’s edition of the Brakpan Herald.
