Kokosi residents’ sewage nightmare

The problems have been going on for months.

Kokosi residents, especially in Extension 6, are in dire straits due to ongoing sewage problems.

“It has been like this for six months. We call the municipality, but they don’t care,” says an affected resident, Ms Tshepiso Raditlalo.

She and others showed the Herald where sewage leaked over streets and yards in Extension 6. So much had dammed up behind Imfundo Secondary School that the street behind the school and some side streets have become unusable.

From here, it flows down the street on the side of the school and into a stormwater drain next to the corner of the main ring road, Lembede Drive.
“We have also called other people to help, but they cannot sort these problems out,” says Raditlalo.

Residents of Extension 6 say whenever they complain to the municipality about any problems in this area, officials refer them to the provincial government instead.

“They always have excuses. It is like we are not part of Merafong,” they lament.

“A project is about to start to resolve the spillage problems at Kokosi Extension 6,” said the municipal marketing and communications manager, Mr Temba Fezani, when asked about the matter. “The process is currently at the final procurement stages,” he added.
