Broken traffic lights create danger in Carletonville CBD

Multiple broken traffic lights in the Carletonville CBD, including busy intersections on Annan Road, are creating safety risks for motorists and leaving the town centre looking neglected.

Residents driving through the Carletonville CBD have to be extremely alert, as many traffic lights are not working.

Motorists and visitors who drive on Carletonville’s main street, Annan Road, have to keep their eyes peeled at the corners of Gold Street. Not only is this, especially around midday, one of the busiest intersections in town, but all the traffic lights are also down.

This turns the crossing into a four-way stop, but, as there are rarely traffic officers around, many drivers take chances and try to rush over the intersection in front of others.

One of the broken traffic light poles has also been lying on the sidewalk for months.

The traffic lights at the corner of Ada and Osmium Street have also been out of order for some time, which has also turned this intersection into a four-way stop. Meanwhile, several other traffic lights are also broken.

The overhead light on Annan Road, as one drives towards Reinecke Street, has been broken for years after it was seemingly struck by something, such as a truck.

Even some of the lights in Halite Street, where the municipality’s main office is situated, are broken.

Several lights at both the T-junctions with Gold Street and Emerald Street, among others, have also been broken for some time.

Not only does this pose a traffic danger, but it also makes the CBD look unkept.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Monday, but received no response by printing time.
