Merafong to repair vandalised Khutsong South cemetery fence

Municipality says procurement process underway after months of delays following graveyard damage

The Merafong City Local Municipality has announced that it will finally repair the broken fence at the Khutsong South graveyard.

The cemetery was targeted by vandals in October last year, leaving many families devastated.

According to the municipality a total of 206 gravestones were damaged during the incident.

It is believed the vandals entered the grounds through large gaps in the fencing. Currently, there are huge open spots at the front and side of the graveyard, while the back section has been left completely open.
Despite promising to fix the fence shortly after the vandalism occurred, the municipality has been accused of dragging their feet with this important project. The Herald took the issue to the municipality again last week.

“The municipality is finalising the procurement processes for the repairs and patching of the missing portions of the concrete palisade fence at Khutsong South Cemetery. The remaining works has been funded for completion during the next financial year,” Merafong City Local Municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, answered.
