Sewage spill floods street near Khutsong South Library

Residents frustrated as ongoing leak goes unattended despite complaints to municipality

Residents of Khutsong Ext 5 had to struggle over and around streams of sewage this week.

About a third of the street leading up to the Khutsong South Library was flooded with sewage on April20. “This is really not nice,” said Bongani Mavuso, who is staying opposite the leak. According to Mavuso, the sewage has been leaking for several days.

Although at least one resident had allegedly notified the Merafong City Local Municipality of the problem, nothing had been done by the time of the Herald’s visit.

The sewage streamed from manholes in yards close to the library and streamed over the sidewalk into the street. According to passers-by, sewage also leaked from other manholes in the next street.

So much sewage was leaking on Monday afternoon that it dammed up next to speed humps.

The sewage eventually disappeared into a stormwater drain lower down the street.

The Herald contacted the municipality’s marketing and communication manager, Temba Fezani, about the problems. He said the leaks had not been reported but will be attended to.
