Upgrades to Popo Molefe Stadium stall as work comes to a halt
Merafong City Local Municipality faces delays amid payment issues and lack of progress on long-awaited Kokosi sports facility
No work is continuing at the Popo Molefe Stadium in Kokosi.
The Merafong City Local Municipality announced toward the end of last year that it would upgrade this facility.
Community members had been looking forward to this project as the Popo Molefe Stadium was once a beautiful facility that hosted provincial sports events, but it has since been badly plundered.
The problems started when the municipality allowed a contractor to build a netball court on the athletics track about a decade ago. After this, the number of people using the stadium dropped drastically. It was later badly vandalised, with the worst damage being done during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Issues with the new project began earlier this year. Work on the Clear View fencing around the stadium and nearby fields stopped in February because the workers had not been paid.
Even though they were eventually paid, very little progress has been made since then.
Large sections of the fencing are still missing, and the pavilion, toilets, and guard house remain in ruins.
There were no workers at the site when the Herald visited it on April 22.
Although the newspaper asked the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, about the project and when it is going to be completed, no response was received by printing time.
