Illegal dumping continues to blight busy Carletonville intersection

Residents are demanding action as rubbish, overgrown grass and a lack of enforcement turn the corner of Agnew and Annan roads into a persistent eyesore.

Despite being a busy thoroughfare for many visitors, the corner of Agnew Road and Annan Road remains one of the dirtiest places in Carletonville.

Over the past week, the area was covered in a massive amount of rubbish, including empty plastic bags, polystyrene food containers, used nappies, and various papers and other waste.

This waste spread across several metres, forcing pedestrians onto a narrow strip of grass to avoid oncoming traffic.

Nearby, the stormwater canal was also filled with filth, and while some trees had been partially cut down, the area remained overgrown and messy.

This corner has been an eyesore for years, requiring continuous cleaning by the local authority. However, the municipality has failed to act on public requests to install no-dumping signs.

Furthermore, despite municipal officials living in government housing right next to the site, no one has ever been caught dumping rubbish there.

The municipality also neglects to cut the grass at this location, turning it into a hiding place for criminals.
The site only ever becomes tidier when it is illegally set on fire.

The Herald raised the issue once again with Temba Fezani, the marketing and communications manager for the Merafong City Local Municipality, but received no response by the time of going to print, and the local authority failed to state when the site would be cleaned.
