League of Laggies comedy night packs Carletonville venue with laughter and live music

A full house at Suits Corner Pocket enjoyed stand-up comedy, R&B performances and a memorable homecoming show by Carletonville comedian The Majestic.

Suits Corner Pocket in Carletonville was packed to capacity on July 1 as the League of Laggies Stand-up Comedy Night #3 delivered hours of non-stop laughter, live RnB and a memorable 10-year homecoming.

The night proved that Carletonville’s appetite for comedy is growing, with audiences staying until the very last act.

MC Ke Boike set the tone early, controlling the stage with tight introductions and hilarious stories that warmed up the crowd from the start. Following this, the line-up brought a mix of familiar faces and fresh energy.

Rei Ramorei marked an impressive return to LoL! with sharp wit and heavy audience interaction, sparking frequent waves of laughter to kick the event off on a high note. Malande, a theatre writer and director, returned for his third LoL! appearance as “the preacher” to deliver the gospel of Laggies.

His sermon-style set kept the crowd in stitches during his biggest Laggies bit yet, showing versatility by delivering new material and promising to meet expectations for quality entertainment.

Ntoni-Ntoni made his LoL! debut with smart social and political satire. His relatable jokes on everyday life gave the night a fresh local voice while paying homage to local entertainers, including actor and filmmaker Thabo Ramaine, who was in attendance.

Tall Dark and Handsome, from the Native Rebels Comedy Club, made his first Carletonville stage appearance. His rapid-fire delivery earned chants from the crowd to stay on stage and perform longer than scheduled.

The night, however, belonged to Carletonville’s own The Majestic. In his first local performance in a decade, the 18-year veteran entered the stage three times as three different comic characters, sparking cheers and sing-alongs.

Between characters, he reflected on his early days in comedy, the ups and downs of his career, bouncing Trevor Noah on his first day on the job, and what it meant to come home. The crowd’s reaction marked it as one of the best League of Laggies performances to date.

Live music kept the energy high between sets, with OH1 Oh2 providing outstanding live band support. Local RnB singer Alex King opened the show.

The night closed with surprise vocalists Roccotole and Omphewaterr from Mofolo, Soweto, who gave the audience a preview of tracks from Roccotole’s upcoming album, Ghetto Gospel. Dakiyamplz! and Moeketsi the DJ with Spice kept the dance floor moving until closing time.

According to the organisers, they will be exploring more venues and hope to host more comedians on stage to maintain a consistent series of events throughout the year.
