Last week, members of the police’s West Rand K9 unit achieved a major success in the Carletonville area after receiving information on August 4 that illegal miners, known as zama-zamas, were staying at a unit in the Elijah Barayi mega housing complex.

Officers went to Block 1410 and discovered two men inside the flat.

During the search, a patrol and explosives dog named Albie quickly sniffed out mining explosives hidden inside a white bag within a pile of tyres.

Working alongside a member of the police explosives unit and a Carletonville detective, officers confirmed that the dangerous materials consisted of 10 tubes of Explogel, 16 detonators, and detonator cord.

The explosives expert safely removed the items, and the two suspects were arrested on the spot.
