Violence almost erupted between community members from two areas in Khutsong at the court appearance of a woman accused of killing her boyfriend.

On August 24, a large group of people gathered at the Khutsong Magistrate’s Court, where Kelegogile Molebatse (25) appeared as accused in the murder case of her late boyfriend, Charles Ganta, who was also in his mid-20s.

According to several people, a fight broke out between the couple near the Khutsong Ext 3 clinic on August 16.

They allegedly fought over money.Ganta died later the same afternoon after being stabbed in the neck with a piece of glass.

Residents of Khutsong Ext 3 support Ganta, who was well-known in the area, while residents of Khutsong Ext 4 support Molebatse, who appeared in court for a bail application.

Members of the two groups, who also support different political parties, almost got physical outside the court while it was adjourned.

“We are very sorry about Charles’ death and want the law to take its course. He was a lovely person and many people knew him,” said one of the residents from the Ext 3 area, Thabo Klaas.

“We know what she did was wrong, but believe it was in self-defence,” said one of Molebatse’s supporters, Sello Molisalife.

In the end, Molebatse was denied bail and the case was postponed until next month.
