Welverdiend sewer problems continue

Residents are asking the municipality to come up with a permanent solution.

This week, residents of the lower section of Welverdiend again had to navigate severe sewer leaks.

Residents in the 25th Avenue area woke to sewage streaming down the street from blocked manholes at about 06:00 on November2. So much sewage was leaking that the street almost looked like a river.

Although municipal workers arrived at the site around midday, residents were still upset about the ongoing problems.

“We appreciate it that the municipality sends people here to come and fix things, but how can the same problems continue for years?” one upset resident wondered.

People in this area have again called on the municipality to find a permanent solution, which they suspect is caused by the town’s sewage infrastructure not being able to handle the number of households it must serve.

They worry that Welverdiend’s sewerage infrastructure has not been adequately upgraded to handle the sewage from thousands of additional houses at the Elijah Barayi mega housing complex and Khutsong Ext 6, which are also channeled through the town’s sewerage system.

Although the Herald asked the municipality about the issue, no feedback was received by printing time.
